What does a yoga class look like for 5-9 year olds?

When you think of a yoga class you may think of an adult class where everyone is silent, moving through poses as the teacher does. Everyone is on their own mat and in their own bubble ensure they do not disturb their neighbor. Now this give you anxiety thinking of your child in a setting like this...

That is not what my children's yoga class will look like! My class is first and foremost focused on fun! What is fun for this age group?

  • Being Loud

  • Lots of Energy

  • Doing Movements Together

  • Props

  • Face Paced (at times to keep attention)

Now you may ask how do you run a yoga class and have all of those things. While I think as adults we some times forget that when you something is learnt while you are having fun it is associated with an enjoyable memory and often easier to recall. So all though we will be having fun, being loud, with lots of energy, etc... we will be practicing yoga movements that have so many benefits for a developing mind and body (see next weeks blog for more on this).

Even with fun there is a typical class structure which is:

  1. Connect: At the start of each class we will do an activity that will bring everyone in the class together and start warming up our bodies for the class.

  2. Poses: We will next do activities that incorporate many yoga poses, including partner poses.

  3. Something Fun: This section is were we do something extra fun like a yoga game.

  4. Quiet Time: At the end of every class we will do a more calm, quiet and relaxing activity to bring everyone back down and hopefully send them home in a calm state.

Now I should preface that 2 and 3 might happen back and forth throughout the class or 2 and 3 might be one in the same.

Now if this sounds like something your child would enjoy and/or benefit from there are still a few spots left in my 6-week session starting tomorrow.
